Why Ushguli is Special

Ushguli is more than just a village; it is a community of four small hamlets that form one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. Located at the foot of Georgia's highest peak, the landscape is defined by its extreme isolation and a staggering density of ancient stone towers. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a window into a medieval way of life that has vanished elsewhere. Frozen in time and surrounded by high-alpine meadows, Ushguli is the spiritual climax of any journey through Svaneti, where the silence of the mountains is broken only by the rushing Enguri River.

The Svan Towers of Ushguli

Unlike the towers in larger towns, the stone defensive structures here feel raw and untouched. Built in the 9th to 12th centuries, these towers served as both family fortresses and storage for food and precious artifacts during the long winter months. Walking through the narrow, rocky paths between the towers in the Chazhashi hamlet—which contains the highest concentration of preserved structures—provides a cinematic sense of history that is unmatched in the Caucasus.

Lamaria Church (The Church of the Mother of God)

Perched on a lonely hill overlooking the village, Lamaria Church is a 10th-century complex dedicated to the Mother of God. This small stone church, surrounded by a low defensive wall, features incredibly old frescoes and is still a place of deep spiritual importance for the local Svan people. Standing in the churchyard offers a powerful visual contrast between the ancient religious architecture and the massive, white wall of the Shkhara mountain range in the background.

Shkhara Glacier

The Shkhara Glacier is the birthplace of the Enguri River and lies just a few hours' walk or a short horse ride from the center of Ushguli. The trail follows the flat river valley, slowly ascending toward the base of Mount Shkhara (5,193m), the highest point in Georgia. Reaching the glacier allows you to witness the immense power of the High Caucasus ice fields up close, as the river bursts forth from the melting ice under the towering cliffs of the main mountain range.

Mount Shkhara Viewpoints

Mount Shkhara dominates every view in Ushguli, its massive 5,000-meter peak acting as a permanent backdrop to the village. There are several ridge walks surrounding the settlement that provide even better vantage points of the entire "Shkhara Wall"—a jagged ridge of ice and rock that forms the border with Russia. For photographers, the golden hour at sunset provides the most spectacular views as the white peak glows in shades of orange and pink above the stone towers.

The Tower of Love

Located on the scenic road between Mestia and Ushguli, the Tower of Love is a solitary stone structure perched on a large rock by the river. Local legend tells of a tragic love story where a girl waited for her lost lover in this very tower. It is a romantic and mysterious stop that adds to the folklore of the region. Many travelers stop here to climb into the small tower and enjoy the view of the rushing water before reaching the higher altitudes of Ushguli.

Ethnographic Museums of Ushguli

Several local families have converted their ancient homes and towers into small private museums. These homes offer an intimate look at Svan daily life, showcasing heavy wooden furniture, traditional weaving tools, and ancient weaponry used to defend the mountain passes. The most famous is the museum located in the 12th-century tower of the Nizharadze family, which provides a deep understanding of the resilience required to live in such a remote environment.

Queen Tamar’s Castle

Situated on a high peak above the village, the ruins of this fortress are traditionally associated with the legendary Queen Tamar, the 12th-century ruler who presided over Georgia’s "Golden Age." While the climb is steep, the panoramic view from the ruins covers all four hamlets of Ushguli and the entire river valley. Local tradition holds that this was the Queen’s summer residence, and the spiritual energy of the site still resonates with the people of the region.
