Why Mestia is Special

The museum houses a staggering collection of 10th-century icons, unique illuminated manuscripts, and ancient gold jewelry from the land of the Golden Fleece. ❖ Hatsvali Ski Resort & Zuruldi Ridge

In the winter, it provides forest-trail skiing, but in the summer, the main attraction is the ride to the Zuruldi Ridge (2,348m). At the top, you will find the highest restaurant in Svaneti, offering an unobstructed, front-row view of the "Queen of the Caucasus"—the double-peaked Mount Ushba. The view from here is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, stretching across the Enguri Gorge to the towering glaciers of the main Caucasus range.

❖ Chaladi Glacier

The trail starts at a suspension bridge and winds through beautiful pine forests and boulder-strewn riverbeds. This traditional Svan residential complex (Machubi) includes a living tower and a large communal room where humans and livestock lived together during the long, snow-locked winters. You can see the intricately carved wooden furniture, the central hearth, and the "cellar" where families stored their grain and wine. It is a living lesson in the resilience and architectural ingenuity of the Svan people.

Mestia is the starting point for the legendary journey to Ushguli, one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. While Mestia has modernized, Ushguli remains frozen in time. The road there is a high-altitude adventure in itself, passing through deep canyons and past the "Tower of Love." Reaching Ushguli reveals a village dominated by dozens of towers and the massive white wall of Mount Shkhara (5,193m), the highest point in Georgia, providing a spiritual and visual climax to any trip to Svaneti.
