Why Mestia is Special
Mestia is the historic, cultural, and spiritual center of Upper Svaneti, a region so remote and unique that it is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Tucked deep within the Great Caucasus range, Mestia is famous for its iconic stone defensive towers—the Svan Towers—which date back to the 9th–12th centuries. This is the land of the Svans, an ethnic subgroup of Georgians with their own unwritten language and ancient traditions. Mestia serves as the ultimate base for adventurers, offering a rare combination of medieval atmosphere, high-altitude trekking, and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe, including the jagged peaks of Ushba and Shkhara.
❖ The Svan Towers (Koshki)
The most defining feature of the Mestia skyline is the cluster of stone defensive towers that have stood for nearly a millennium. Originally built to protect families against invaders and blood feuds, as well as natural disasters like avalanches, these towers are masterpieces of medieval engineering. Many of these towers are still owned by local families, and several are open to the public, allowing you to climb the narrow wooden ladders to the top floor for a breathtaking view of the surrounding peaks and the town’s ancient stone neighborhoods.
❖ Svaneti Museum of History and Ethnography
Don't let the word "museum" fool you—this is one of the most significant cultural treasuries in the world. Because of Svaneti’s extreme geographic isolation, it became the "safe room" for Georgia's national treasures during centuries of invasions. The museum houses a staggering collection of 10th-century icons, unique illuminated manuscripts, and ancient gold jewelry from the land of the Golden Fleece. The modern building itself offers a stunning panoramic window looking out over the town, perfectly blending the ancient artifacts with the living landscape outside.
❖ Hatsvali Ski Resort & Zuruldi Ridge
A short drive or a scenic cable car ride from the center of Mestia takes you to Hatsvali, a resort that offers year-round beauty. In the winter, it provides forest-trail skiing, but in the summer, the main attraction is the ride to the Zuruldi Ridge (2,348m). At the top, you will find the highest restaurant in Svaneti, offering an unobstructed, front-row view of the "Queen of the Caucasus"—the double-peaked Mount Ushba. The view from here is considered one of the most beautiful in the world, stretching across the Enguri Gorge to the towering glaciers of the main Caucasus range.
❖ Chaladi Glacier
For those who want to touch the ice of the High Caucasus without professional climbing gear, the hike to the Chaladi Glacier is a must. The trail starts at a suspension bridge and winds through beautiful pine forests and boulder-strewn riverbeds. As you approach the glacier, the temperature drops and the roar of the Mestiachala River grows louder. Standing at the foot of this massive ice tongue, where the river is born directly from the melting glacier, provides a powerful and humbling perspective on the raw forces of nature that shaped this region.
❖ Koruldi Lakes
Located high above Mestia, the Koruldi Lakes are famous not for the lakes themselves, but for the mirrors they provide to the sky and the mountains. The reflection of the jagged peaks in the alpine water is a photographer’s dream. The journey to the lakes is a steep ascent that can be done via a challenging hike or a thrilling 4x4 Jeep tour. Once at the top (2,740m), you are surrounded by a 360-degree panorama of the highest peaks in Georgia, including Shkhara, Tetnuldi, and the terrifyingly beautiful silhouette of Ushba.
❖ Margiani’s House-Museum
To truly understand how people lived in this harsh mountain environment centuries ago, a visit to the Margiani family’s complex is essential. This traditional Svan residential complex (Machubi) includes a living tower and a large communal room where humans and livestock lived together during the long, snow-locked winters. You can see the intricately carved wooden furniture, the central hearth, and the "cellar" where families stored their grain and wine. It is a living lesson in the resilience and architectural ingenuity of the Svan people.
❖ The Road to Ushguli
Mestia is the starting point for the legendary journey to Ushguli, one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. While Mestia has modernized, Ushguli remains frozen in time. The road there is a high-altitude adventure in itself, passing through deep canyons and past the "Tower of Love." Reaching Ushguli reveals a village dominated by dozens of towers and the massive white wall of Mount Shkhara (5,193m), the highest point in Georgia, providing a spiritual and visual climax to any trip to Svaneti.
