Gudauri
Top Highlights & Must-See Destinations
Why Gudauri is Special
Gudauri is the highest and most modern ski resort in Georgia, located on a south-facing plateau of the Greater Caucasus Mountain Range at an elevation of 2,200 meters. Because of its high altitude and unique microclimate, the resort enjoys a long ski season—from December to April—and is famous for its "powder" snow and vast, treeless slopes. While it is a world-class destination for winter sports, Gudauri is also a breathtaking year-round mountain escape. Its proximity to the Georgian Military Highway makes it the perfect stop for those seeking high-adrenaline paragliding, panoramic views, and the crispest mountain air in the country.
❖ The Gudauri Ski Resort & Slopes
Gudauri features over 70 kilometers of ski runs designed for every level, from beginners to professional freeriders. The resort is equipped with modern, high-speed Doppelmayr lifts that carry skiers and snowboarders up to the summit of Mount Kudebi (3,006m) and Mount Sadzele (3,307m). Unlike many European resorts, Gudauri’s slopes are located above the tree line, which creates a massive open space for skiing. This layout makes the resort a global hotspot for "Backcountry" and "Heli-skiing," where enthusiasts can access untouched powder fields and steep couloirs far away from the groomed trails.
❖ Georgia-Russia Friendship Monument (Gudauri Panorama)
Perched on the edge of a deep abyss at the "Devil's Valley," this massive circular stone and concrete monument is one of the most photographed structures in Georgia. Built in 1983 to celebrate the bicentennial of the Treaty of Georgievsk, the interior features a vibrant, wrap-around tile mural depicting scenes from Georgian and Russian history and daily life. While the monument itself is an architectural curiosity, the real draw is the location. The balconies overhanging the canyon provide heart-stopping views of the Aragvi gorge and the jagged peaks of the Caucasus, making it a mandatory stop for any traveler passing through the region.
❖ Paragliding Over the Caucasus
Gudauri is recognized as one of the best locations in the world for tandem paragliding. Because of the thermal air currents and the dramatic elevation drops, travelers can soar thousands of feet above the snowy peaks with professional pilots. Taking off from the snowy ridges and gliding over the deep canyons provides a perspective of the mountains that is impossible to get from the ground. The flights offer a 360-degree view of the entire range, including a distant look at Mount Kazbek on clear days, and usually land safely in the valley below.
❖ Jvari Pass (Cross Pass)
Just a few kilometers past the main resort lies the Jvari Pass, the highest point of the Georgian Military Highway at 2,395 meters. The pass is named after a marble cross erected by King David the Builder, and later replaced by General Ermolov in the 19th century. This area marks the continental divide between the Terek and Aragvi river basins. In the summer, the pass is surrounded by vibrant green pastures and grazing sheep, while in the winter, it becomes a dramatic, snow-choked corridor. It is a place of immense geological significance where you can feel the true scale of the ancient transit route through the mountains.
❖ Mount Kudebi & Mount Sadzele Summits
Even if you are not a skier, you can take the sequence of cable cars to reach the highest accessible peaks of the resort. Mount Kudebi offers a stunning observation deck and a high-altitude café where you can enjoy traditional mountain tea or wine with a view of the surrounding valleys. For those seeking the ultimate height, the lift to Mount Sadzele reaches over 3,300 meters, offering a silence and a sense of isolation that is rare to find. From these summits, the horizon is a jagged line of 5,000-meter peaks, providing some of the most powerful panoramic photo opportunities in Georgia.
❖ Mineral Spring Travertines
On the descent from the Jvari Pass toward the town of Stepantsminda, a unique natural phenomenon appears on the side of the road. Known as the "Travertines," these are limestone deposits created by mineral-rich water flowing over the rocks for thousands of years. The water has left behind a white and orange "frozen waterfall" effect that is slippery to the touch but incredibly beautiful. This mineral water is naturally carbonated and drinkable, and many locals and tourists stop here to fill bottles with the cold, iron-rich spring water directly from the mountain's heart.
❖ The Aragvi River Valley
Below the high cliffs of Gudauri lies the Aragvi valley, which serves as a playground for summer activities. The river is divided into the "White" and "Black" Aragvi, which famously meet but do not mix colors for a long stretch. This area is the center for white-water rafting and mountain trekking. In the warmer months, the valley floors are filled with shepherds moving their flocks and small mountain villages where you can taste authentic "Mountain Khinkali," which is said to be the best in Georgia due to the fresh mountain meat and traditional spices used by the locals.
